The Dragon's Tail and Other Family Mishaps

Opening image for the story
The air hung thick with the scent of paint thinner and the unmistakable aroma of Dad's "classic rock" - a term Alex used loosely, considering the playlist was mostly 80s power ballads. Hugo, 14 and sporting a pair of oversized headphones, was attempting to paint a mural of a dragon on the garage wall. It was a valiant effort, but the dragon looked more like a confused, green-scaled dachshund. "Dude, you gotta get some perspective," Alex said, his voice muffled by the paint mask. "That dragon's tail is longer than the garage itself!" Hugo, unfazed, continued to meticulously paint tiny scales. "It's a *realistic* dragon, Dad. They're supposed to be long." Alex sighed, the music swelling to a crescendo of soaring vocals and dramatic guitar riffs. "Realistic? This thing looks like it's been eating too many burritos." He took a step back, surveying the scene. The garage was a chaotic mess of paint splatters, half-finished projects, and a lone, very confused dragon. "You know, I used to think I was a cool dad," Alex said, his voice laced with mock despair. "Now I'm just the guy who plays Journey while his son paints a dragon that looks like it's about to burst." Hugo finally removed his headphones, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Hey, at least you're not the one who's going to have to explain to Mom why the garage looks like a green, scaly monster threw up on it." Alex laughed, the sound echoing in the cavernous space. Maybe, just maybe, this wasn't so bad after all. He might be a dad who played Journey, but he was also a dad who could laugh at himself, and that, he realized, was pretty cool.
